Kara Grogan
Kara Grogan has a broad intellectual property practice with years of litigation experience focusing on patent litigation with an emphasis on Section 337 proceedings before the U.S. International Trade Commission.
Kara is particularly experienced in handling all aspects of pre-trial litigation in patent and trade secret infringement cases, including pre-suit diligence and developing infringement and invalidity contentions. She has performed analyses for damages, domestic industry, and public interest positions. Kara has drafted and responded to pleadings, briefs, and motions in a variety of patent and trademark cases. She has also assisted experts in drafting expert reports, conducted fact and expert depositions, and presented claim construction arguments at MarkmanHearings. At the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, she has drafted pleadings for appeals of inter partes review cases from the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Her practice also encompasses trademark and copyright due diligence and prosecution. The technologies within Kara’s scope of work include: semiconductors, wind turbine generators, magnets, LCDs, pharmaceuticals, and antibodies.
During law school, Kara was the publications editor for the Northeastern University Law Review, served as an intern at the ITC, and was a judicial intern to the Honorable George A. O’Toole of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
Kara co-authored three articles on standard essential patents and patent pools published by IPWatchdog and Law360, including: The Patent Pool Explained: An Effective Mechanism When the Burden is Shared, A Critique of Glory Days and How Reports of Anticompetitive Risks of Pools Have Been Greatly Exaggerated, and DOJ Support of SEP Injunctions Should Stabilize Licensing.
Kara is a graduate of Northeastern University School of Law. She received her bachelor’s degree, cum laude, in Political Science, History, and International Relations from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Kara graduated with Honors in History and is a member of the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Chapter of Phi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honors Society. Kara played NCAA Division III Women’s Varsity Lacrosse, where she was the Lacrosse team representative for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee & Rising Stars Leadership Program and received the Shirley Zornow ’48 Lacrosse Coaches Award.
Kara is a member of the Massachusetts bar and admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
